Sarah C - Check out the pre 'Working Mans Dead' albums, in particular the 1969 album 'Live / Dead'. Their sound was built around extensive jams. All the songs from this double album are long instrumentals, with 'Dark Star' clocking in at 23 minutes! If you like early Pink Floyd, check out the album 'Anthem of the Sun'. It has some really cool sounds. There's one song where they took a few live recordings from different gigs, and spliced and overdubbed them with studio recordings. Really experimental, with lots of long improvisational jams.
After the Live/Dead album, the band really changed their direction, ie Working Mans Dead & American Beauty, which I love by the way.

I'm not a real big fan of jam bands because their discographies can be very confusing to me, and I generally don't listen to live albums, but I guess the Allman Brothers Band. One of the best live bands ever, and it's surprising how many good guitarists they've had ever the years, Duane Allman being their best of course.
