Child Support is mandatory and separate from parental rights in all states.

I suspect that this is just a threat. I am NOT licensed in Michigan, so any information I provide you should verify with an attorney licensed in Michigan. This is general information, not specific advise to your situation. In most states, voluntary termination of parental rights can not be used as a way to avoid child support unless it is done as part of an adoption procedure, i.e. step-parent adoption, etc. Many judges will allow a parent to terminate rights, but still require the payment of child support. I strongly urge you to contact an attorney licensed in Michigan so that you can know exactly what your rights are, and how you can protect yourself. This slime bag who would do this to his own kid cares nothing about anything except the money, and you should not let him get away with it if you can prevent it. Contact your state or local bar association for a referral.

yes... I live in michigan and I know this to be true...Unless your child is legally adopted you will have to pay child support regardless if your rights were terminated.

That is right. Even if you give up your rights to the chld, you are still responsible for providing for that child financially.

Now if that child is leaggly adpoted then that is when you are not financially responsible. Now I have heard of cases where the financial obligations was reduced to the circumstances of the case.

In Michigan a man has no parental rights unless you can afford three lawyers; the "family courts" dont care if it's on paper or not. Trust me, I know from experience.

You betcha. That is pretty consistent across the country, too. If you produce a kid, you are responsible for providing for that kid, even if you lose the rights to parenting that kid. The kid is the key: they are not at fault for your fallout with your spouse, and deserve to be taken care of despite one spouse's inability or lack of desire to be a good parent.
