This city has been in decline for decades. Unfortunately, government and business leaders have been very short sighted. The economy has been overly dependent on the auto industry and has not built cars of the future. Leadership clearly missed opportunities to lead the automotive industry. The big three automakers simply move to cheaper manufacturing locations.

The education in the state of Michigan has been remarkable, but Microsoft and other employeers steal the best talent.

It's time for innovation and exploration into new markets (perhaps green) to replace a declining economy in the region. Where's the political and business leadership?

Before you pay too much attention to that "study," keep in mind that a lot of big cities, including Chicago and Minnepolis, were not part of the survey because of incomplete data. Detroit is in terrible shape, but that study is not accurate.

Detroit has lost over a million people in the last three decades - that loss of population and revenue has been a real blow, and the recovery will not be soon in coming.

I believe for right now it's unemployment and the housing debacle. Detroit has been the most dangerous city in the past, but it came back out of it. At the rate it's going it will soon also be the lonliest city because no one will be there.
