Why did the 1972 Miami Dolphins (15-0 at the time) have to travel to Pittsburgh to play the 12-3 Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game? What was the rule about home-field advantage in playoff games at the time?

Home-field advantage was rotated among the divisions at that time. The AFC Central had it that year, so they played the game at Pittsburgh.

phunkeep is right. h-f-a rotated from 1970 to 1974. only the wildcard (and there was only 1 in each conference)team had a guaranteed road game, but they werent allowed to play a team from their own division (like baseball).

the best-seed system we know today started in 1975.
