I saw that in Australia, Santas are being asked to refrain from saying "ho, ho, ho" because it is offense to women and scares children. I saw another news clip today that said in England, Santas are being urged to slim down (not use padding), to help combat childhood obesity by being a proper role model. What do you think about this? Good intentions, or ruining a tradition?

Thanks everyone... I thought I was the only on who saw this as insane. I can see offering fruit instead of candy canes, but that's about it. You've restored my holiday spirit. Thank you.

It is definitely ruining a tradition. As far as I'm concerned, if Santa saying "ho ho ho" offends a woman, then she has a guilty conscious and is one. And how it scares children is beyond me! And as far as childhood obesity...come on! Since when do children look to Santa as a role model? He's a wonderful character for children, but not a role model! Do kids look up to the Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy? I don't think so. They are just a magical part of childhood. People need to quit worrying about being "politically correct" and worry about things that REALLY matter.

I think it's ridiculous! Santa is SUPPOSED to be this jolly old fat man who goes around saying HO HO HO and MERRY CHRISTMAS to the kids. A large number of kids DO get scared when they meet him, but that's not because of the HO HO HO it's because it's some guy that they've never met before and people just tend to throw the poor kids up onto his knee. Of course they're going to be scared at first.
It's ruining the Santa tradition and it's very sad that this world has become so PC that many ALLOW this to happen. I blame those who allow a few complainers to cause US to change to their whims.

LOL. Where to begin? Obesity is an epidemic, and I can understand people doing whatever they can to try to slow it down and squash it, unfortunately this is one idea (that's really useless) that they latched onto. The "ho" part, c'mon some people just need to chill and not get offended by everything, where do we draw the line? And by the way this is Santa we're talking about, and really how important or influential is he to anything? I wouldn't mind if he was abolished, I mean he isn't real remember and the holiday isn't about him *hint* hint. In fact my little siblings were never taught to believe in him and when other kids tell them about him, they find it so funny and ridiculous, they don't pop their friends dreams but they come home and ask as why and how can people care and believe about something as silly as Santa. He is such a far cry from St. Nicholas.

Actually, the traditional Santa Claus figure in Europe was slim or at least not obese. What really irks me is when ppl are afraid to put up Christmas trees or to say "Merry Christmas."

oh my goodness, how silly! So do I need to change the name of my backyard tool (hoe) so as to not offend any women?
And what child attributes their obesity to wanting to look like Santa??
The intentions may be good, but it's definitely ruining a tradition. Just because intentions are good doesn't make it the right thing to do.

This is ruining the spirit of christmas. Santa Claus is a tradition. He is suppose to say "Ho Ho Ho " he isnt saying "hoe, hoe, hoe" and he is suppose to be fat. That is horrible that they are ruining a tradition like that.

It's total rubbish. You can't blame a nation's obesity problems on a jolly old fat man, and you can't associate the word "ho" with a whore when it means something totally different when Santa is saying it. You can link everything to something bad if you think hard enough. The idea is to NOT try to connect everything to something perverse or unhealthy.
