The movie "8mm" is a fiction movie about snuff films -- and they are real. Before VCRs, porn flicks were available in 8mm reels of poor production quality. I'm not talking about theatrical releases, but rather the more amateurish variety that were not feature-length.
In the 1980s, I recall reading about "snuff" films coming out of Brazil. Special effects, while reasonably sophisticated in Hollywood, were not required for these films. Apparently there was a demand for these films, and a supply of naive young women who responded with the terror that delights serial killers and voyeuristic sickos. There are more sick, evil sociopaths out there than anyone wants to know about.
Law enforcement and special effects have probably made true snuff films very scarce, but it's a safe bet that authentic snuff films are still produced somewhere and that they cost quite a bit of money to obtain. I am quite sure that I never want to meet anyone associated with the production or sale of such films.

Both no and yes. Snuff films are a urban legend. The reason for this being is that snuff films are highly illegal everywhere in the world, enough to the point where selling it can carry a death sentence for the seller in certain countries; so if some do exist the person who made it probably keeps it for himself or herself. While there are some cases of police finding serial killers who video taped their rapes and murders, there is no evidence of any sales of snuff films ever existing anywhere in the world. The Guinea pig films are a case where they thought they had found actual snuff films that where mass produced and sold, but after the makers of those films were put on trail they had to show the judge the films were in fact fakes. Snuff films are a urban legend mostly created by Hollywood horror writers. The film that created the legend was ironically called "Snuff." After that horror films kept reusing the themes that the film "Snuff" had created. P.S.- Stuff like faces of death and Taliban videos are not snuff, as the people who originally made those videos weren't committing the act of murder on tape for the purposes of entertainment and profit. So the segments on faces of death are not snuff even though the people who made those movies are selling it for a profit. It's more documentary.

I saw a documentary once where a woman said she made snuff films, but they weren't real. She said they were acted out and that there were people who bought them for alot of money because they thought they were real.
I've seen a couple on the Internet that look incredibly real though. One showed a knife slowly going into a guys neck, and I watched it really closely over and over and could not see any sign of computer generation or props, so it sure looked real to me.
I have to believe there are films out there, but of course they would be in very limited release and are probably made overseas. There are probably some about the war in iraq.
There was one showing a public beheading which certainly looked real and of course Sadaam's hanging is probably out there somewhere. They've filmed troops getting killed.
There are also the "Faces of Death" movies, which looked very real.

The "Faces of Death" videos, while partially scripted, are sometimes considered snuff films because they feature some actual deaths on video tape. Those became quite popular for some time.
And now that the internet is commonplace, there are downloads (some free, some not free) available of beheadings (Daniel Pearl's beheading, for example), people committing suicide, etc. Those are today's snuff films, and thousands of people download those videos. Hell, the website rotten.com (while it doesn't have video) has featured photos and accounts from murder/suicide/crime scenes for years.
So, yeah, I'd say it's a real thing.

Who knows. I'm sure they do, I mean if kiddie porn exists, then I'm sure snuff films do too. Did you ever see the movie 8mm? People act as if these things don't exist, but if there is a market, people will buy!
