i think it would vary day to day, and situation to situation, then of course you have your long term things to plan for
for instance, long term, you should plan to be out of work at some point in life, and its suggested that you save 3 months living expenses,
you should also plan for a future time when you cannot work, either with a retirement plan, plan to live on social security (if its still around) or a savings
other then those, really we plan for the activities we will be doing, that we expect to do, whether a vacation, marriage, birth of a child, we may do general planning ahead of time, but we do the detailed as we get closer to them
then we also consider day by day, give yourself some leeway to work with, especially time wise , understand things dont always go the way we think, be able to adapt and adjust,
plan to have that project completed the day before
that meal ready a half hour before
add in a little travel time to allow for accidents and traffic jams
a child or yourself getting ill
basically, the biggest plusses in the short term planning are the ability to adjust and adapt, as you cant forsee all the eventualities
