Here's a "dumb" answer: it's about our individual rights and freedoms. "Unhealthier day-after-day". So are Big Macs, triple-pounders, and supersize fries clogging up our arteries and making a nation obese. How many people go have a few "brewskis" after work and walk around looking pregnant because of it? How many of us vegetate in front of our TVs most evenings for hours at a time?
Most of us do things that aren't healthy -- we have that freedom. Do you want the government to ban tobacco? Beer? Big Macs? Do you want the government to tell you what you can eat and drink, what you can and can't do, when you can and can't watch TV, where you can and can't go? It's already happening; our individual rights and freedoms are slowly being taken away and most people don't even see it.

It's called denial. It's their way of ignoring reality. Smokers tend to get offended when non-smokers mention the dangers of smoking. I smoked for 15 years, but quit for good when I got pregnant with my daughter. My husband and I haven't smoked in nearly 2 years, and both of us regret starting in the first place. We're currently trying to talk a friend of ours into quitting because he's got some health issues, but he's very malignant with us when we bring it up.

Like any other thing a person chooses to do it is their choice. Do you hold the same attitude towards a Twinkie eater or a person that eats the garbage they serve at fast food? Same thing. Judgement of your fellow humans is also unhealthy.

I don't smoke, and I don't care if others do, we all are allowed to choose what we do, it's none of your business if they want to smoke, so many people are for many many reasons smoking isn't as horrible as it's made out to be. It's like they are all killers or something, why don't you lighten up and let people just be who they are,

And it's still legal! If the government wasn't making tons on tax money and the politicians pocketing tobacco lobby $$$$$ it would be illegal. Tobacco destroys.
