first JoeC: you have no idea what you're talking about, a liberal household, My grandfather who started his life sweeping floors in a mill and worked his way up to AVP of this metal company was so very conservative. He was a bootstrap boy all the way. His son (my Dad) used to call his mother by her first name. He always told us she was like a child, so it had nothing to do with a liberal home. My grandfather would roll in his grave if he heard you.

So my Dad called his mother by her first name. She was a babyish person, I think she was left in an orphanage while her father went to Sweden to get a 2nd wife after his first one died. She was the only person where they lived that had a cleaning lady come in and help her during the Depression

I never called my parents by their first name. It was not something I ever considered doing.

I called my granddad, who raised me from babyhood, "Daddy," or "PopPop."

I called my aunt and uncle by their Christian names (Francis and Bobby, respectively) only.

And when I finally met my mother, I called her "Mama."

It's funny, though...my younger sister called our mother her Christian name (Martha Ann) from the time she was little up until our mother died 8 years ago. Our mother never seemed to mind, at least not as far as I could tell.

It's pretty much a respect thing as far as I'm concerned. I'm almost thirty years old and I still address people who are older than I am with Mr/Ms in front of their names, as in "Mr. Charlie" or "Ms. Theresa," for example, and I teach my kids the same thing.
