My Shadow by Robert Louis Stevenson-1913-A Child's Garden Book of Verses. We had to memorize the poem in about 3rd grade. "I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, and what can be the use of him is more than I can see......
Have been teaching the poem to a 4 yr. old Grand child who is mesmerized by his and others shadows. We are having such a great time stepping on each others shadows as we take afternoon walks.
Have been teaching the older Grand children nonsense poems by Shel Silverstein, from the books: A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends. Their parents remember them as fond memories of childhood.
Now that the holiday season is here, I recite the Night Before Christmas (by Clementes) as a tradition to the Grandchildren, the same as I did their parents.

If it weren't for us "oldies", the kids today wouldn't know these little gems. Today's society dubs them too violent, promotion of bad habits(example: Today Jack Spratt and his wife would be labeled with an eating disorder!). Unbelievable!

To jump rope:
Down in the meadow where the green grass grows
There sat [Audrey], sweet as a rose
She sang and she sang and she sang so sweet
Along came [Jack] and swept her off her feet
My, my, oughtta be ashamed
Give a girl and kiss and not even know her name.
