Can being sick cause you have contractions, or put you into labor? I'm coming down with a really nasty cold, and i'm not sure, but my head feels kinda hot. I've had this for a couple days now. It's just starting to get worse. I've been having constant cramping in the vagina area, and LOTS of painful pressure. I'm 35 weeks. Thanks for your time.

I think that your cold and the cramping you are feeling are not related at all.

The cold virus will only make you feel bad, but it won't have any affect on your baby. And labor is triggered by hormones which a cold doesn't have any control over.

The only thing a mother should worry about when she is ill is dehydration and that shouldn't be a problem with a cold because it won't stop you from taking in adequate fluids. Dehydration is only a problem with illnesses like diarrhea.

So don't worry at all. Just rest and eat what you can and stay hydrated. You might try a saline nasal spray and tylenol for relief.

The cramping and pressure you feel are the baby's head pressing on your pelvic floor. This is a common feeling later in pregnancy, especially after your baby "drops."

Hope you are feeling better soon. I just got over a bad cold myself. If your cold gets worse or you have fever and swollen glands in your neck, you might want to check and see if you haven't developed a sinus infection. A fever over 103 can be potentially harmful to your baby.

Hey, yes it can, I got terribly sick at 23 weeks and started having many contractions (BH ones) the doc said that dehydration and sickness causes this. I didn't go into preterm labor (thank God) but I did have to stay in the hospital for a night to be monitored. Just drink a lot of water and rest...it should ease up, but if it is "Painful" like you say I would go to the hospital, they can check you out and give you an IV. Good luck! Oh, and the reason sickness sometimes causes preterm labor is because it is a way of protecting the baby from the sickness...although mostly the sickness hurts us woman and rarely the baby who lives off of our immune systems...

Labor can actually feel like flu-like symptoms. What you're feeling may be your body preparing for labor. Put your feet up! I know you're at work right now, but if you're having regular, uncomfortable contractions, you need to be checked (Especially if there's any spotting/bleeding). If it's just cramping, I'd suggest getting checked as well. Pressure is a pretty darn good sign of labor as well... You may want to call someone in to relieve you- and head to the doctor. Good luck!

Having a cold can't make you go into labor but the dehydration of being sick can cause contractions. If you stomach is getting tight with the pains you are having you should call the doctor. Also a high fever can be dangerous for a fetus so you need to take tylenol to get it down.

No, the cold can't...check for a fever if your head feels hot...and take Tylenol to get it down to normal. An elevated maternal temp is bad for the baby.

If you're getting lots of pain and pressure, call your doctor.

And there's no such thing as 'stuck at work' when you're pregnant. Baby takes precedence. Call your doctor right now.

Dehydration, commonly caused by fevers, can cause early labor. You should call your dr. or go to the hospital if you think there's a problem.

Short answer is yes, it can. Best advice is to call your doctor (or his / her nurse) and discuss your problem with them. The major issue with illness during pregnancy is dehydration. People don't realize how quickly they can get dehydrated and this can have severe implications on the young one.

If it's a steady cramping that doesn't go away... it might be labour.
