Here's one for the older members of this club, or those who are good at research.

Richard Tauber, the Austrian Tenor, recorded many songs and sang or performed in many shows and some films where the music and lyrics were composed or written by Franz Lehar.

Did Tauber ever appear in either a stage or film production of The Merry Widow?

If he did, is it available as DVD.

There are numerous CD's where he sings various individual tracks from the show, but I have not yet found him singing the complete operetta.

Thanks JA12. Unfortunately Tauber doesn't appear on any of the recordings you suggest. As it was one of Lehar's most successful works, I'm sure that Tauber must have appeared in the show at some time, and I would have imagined him to have held the lead male role of Danilov. As that may well have been in the 1930's in Austria or Germany, or in the 1940's in England however, its quite possible that it was not recorded or filmed though.

None of JA 12's links have anything to do with Richard Tauber (being later recordings after Tauber was long dead!).

I've done a pretty thorough search in several languages and can't find Tauber in a complete Merry Widow.

You might try sending an e-mail to info@richardtauber.com. If anyone knows, they should.

There is one with Richard Tauber singing excerpts on Naxos Historical - catalogue number 8110779. I have searched www.mdt.co.uk which deal in most classical CDs available world wide and apart from the Naxos they do not list either a Tauber complete Merry Widow, nor a DVD of his performance
