My school is performing Carousel this year and I'm auditioning for the character Enoch Snow. Would anyone who is familiar with the show know all of the songs Enoch sings?

COMMENTARY:

Enoch Snow is a powerful character. He dreams of his future success and speculates with Carrie Pipperidge about life with lots of children and good social standing. Julie Jordon marries Billy Bigelow and they go on to a life full of domestic violence, illegal activity and unhappiness. Enoch Snow helps Carrie rise abover her working class past and they end up with several children and a solid middle class life.

As the show progresses, Enoch leaves Carrie for a while but comes back to her.

Billy sees that Enoch wants everything he wants but also that he achieves the happy life always out of Billy's reach. The dark and unhappy life Billy and Julie live is in stark contrast to the happiness Enoch and Carrie build.

Enoch sings "Geraniums in the Winder" when he believes he has lost Carrie. Later, we find that they reconcile and go on to the life they dreamed of, but do they achieve the happiness they wanted too?

CAROUSEL is Rodgers and Hammerstein's darkest show, but also one of the best stories. It examines domestic violence and frustration with life and the chance to make things right again. The music is more involved than in most of the other R&H musicals, but you can hear the signature Rodgers and Hammerstein styles. The songs are vocally demanding and require real singing ability. The role of Enoch Snow requires a wide vocal range and the ability to protray great emotion in order to make the portrayal believable. I hope you enjoy your audition and I wish you the best in your pursuit of the role you want. If you don't get it, have fun with it anyway. The magic and beauty of this show are a joy to be part of.

Several years after I was in this show, I had the pleasure to meet the original Nettie, an actress names Christine Johnson. She was very gracious and spent a while discussing her friendship with R&H. Before we left that day, she sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" for us and still had a strong, clear voice at age 81! I share this story to illustrate my point that once you've been in a show this good, you will carry the experience with you forever.
