Ok... this is what happened... I was drinking in this girls apartment on our college campus and the cops came in (city cops, not school cops) and they asked everyone who was 21... I said i was and i was the only 21 year old in the apartment. The cop took me outside and said wait there. He went back inside for a good bit with my ID and got all my information. He came back out saying that 4 out of 5 people said that i supplied all the alcohol in the apartment. I told him that i did not purchase any alcohol that night (which was the truth). He came back out and said that he was going to give me a ticket for contributing to underage possesion. I then was walked outside and told that i was not able to leave until a friend came and picked me up. he came and got me and thats what my ticket says is "contributing to underage possesion". What do i do now? how much will this fine be? what should i do if i have to go to court? do i have to go to court or can i just pay it through the mail

First, contact an attorney. There are several factors to take into account here. For example, if they state that you received the ticket for "supplying" the liquor, they will need to prove that you supplied it. (And if you ask around and find out who did supply it, it may make your case easier.)

But if they said you were contributing just by being there and not stopping the other minors (you knew that the girl whose apartment it was is a minor) then you may not have much of a case.

Chances are you will need to go to court - it will say that on the ticket. If you can just pay the fine, the instructions and amount will be on the ticket.

If you have to go to court, you will be able to plead "no contest" if you just want it over and done with. This will be on your record, but since you were there you will likely have some sort of record out of this anyway. Fortunately it sounds like a first offense, so you shouldn't get too much.

This falls under the "contributing to the delinquincy" umbrella and may affect your ability to get any kind of a job where minors may be involved (teaching for example). You need to meet with the city attorney, with your own attorney present of course, and try to cut a deal that doesn't involve minors. Maybe, maintaining a disorderly house, or misdemeanor drunk and disorderly. Good Luck.

Let's clear something up first. You said you did not buy any alcohol that night...but did you supply anyone with alcohol?

If you happen to be a republican congressman, you're gonna be fine. Just apologize and go into rehab.
If you're anything else, you've got a lot of trouble coming your way.

Only a lawyer can help you. Call your local public defenders office.
