The trick is to find a common denominator.
The easy way (not necessarity the most efficient) is to multiply one denominator by the other. For example, 14 times 21 = 294.
You can always take any number (including a fraction) and multiply it by 1 : its value will not change.
1 can be written, for example, as 21/21
(11/14)*(21/21) = (11*21)/(14*21) = 231/294
The fraction 231/294 has the same value as 11/14.
(-16/21)*(14/14) = (-16*14)/(21*14) = -224/294
-224/294 has the same value as -16/21
11/14 minus -16/21
is the same as
231/294 minus -224/294
minus a negative number is the same as adding a positive number.
This comes from the fact that subtracting a number is the same as adding (-1) times the number.
231/294 minus -224/294
is the same as
231/294 plus (-1)*( -224/294)
231/294 plus(-1* -224)/294
231/294 plus 224/294
New, we have a simple addition of two fractions over the same denominator. It is like adding apples with apples.
(231+224)/294

11/14 - (-16/21)
Because a negative is being taken away, the two negative signs become positive:
11/14 + 16/21
In the addition of fractions, the two denominators must be same:
Multiply the first fraction by 21 and the second by 14:
231/294 + 224/294
= 455/294
= 1 and 161/294

you just need to find the LCM. I believe the LCM is 42. so you need to multiply 3 to get 42 as the denominator of 11/14 if you do, you will get 33/42. for you to get 42 for the denominator of 16/21, you need to multiply 2 to the numerator and denominator. if you do , you will get 32/42 right? then you subtract 33/42 and 32/42 right? then you will get 1/42 as the answer.
