A Hippie is someone who lives to live, to love their life. They except all and try to see the good in all. And most of them that I know do love music... in fact it's their life. They follow bands around and are open to anything. To me hippies are the nicest people you will ever meet. But that's what a hippie is to me. I admire them...

They stand up for what they believe. And hippies have been around for a really really long time. I believe it really started in the mid to late 50's. And took over in the 60's. And they are here to stay. There will always be hippies. And yes most hippies experiment with drugs and they really are free spirited. They love who they are and that's is truly why I admire them. And not all hippies are "dirty" like everyone thinks. And not all of them are into drugs. Some are just simply happy with who they are and excepting.

Many hippies did go to college and earn degrees. Some did drugs, but not all--some were health addicts. Many took on what were then known as alternative religions, and many others became atheists.

Many are alive and well in Tucson, Arizona--and have owned stores in the University area (4th Avenue) for 30+ years. Some of them are lawyers.

Many today are into alternative medicines, sell retro clothing and books, shop at food co-ops and farmer's markets, and grow much of their own food.

If I remember correctly people like "Ben & Jerry" started out as hippies. Many went into their own businesses.....rather than work for the 'establishment'.

Many in the Northwest US vicinity are still living off the land...and some are eccentrics who don't want anyone coming near their houses and land.

The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that began in the United States during the mid-1960s and spread around the world. The word "hippie" derives from word "hipster", and was initially used to describe beatniks who had moved into San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. These people inherited the countercultural values of the Beat Generation, created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution, and used drugs like cannabis and LSD to explore consciousness.

In 1967, the San Francisco Human Be-In popularized hippie culture, leading to the legendary Summer of Love on the West Coast of the United States, and the 1969 Woodstock Festival on the East Coast. In Mexico, the "jipitecas" formed La Onda Chicana and gathered at "Avándaro", while in New Zealand, nomadic housetruckers practiced alternative lifestyles and promoted sustainable energy at Nambassa. In the United Kingdom, mobile "peace convoys" of New age travellers made summer pilgrimages to free music festivals at Stonehenge.

Hippie fashion and values had a major effect on culture, influencing music, television, film, literature, and art. Since the 1960s, the hippie counterculture has largely been assimilated by the mainstream. The religious and cultural diversity espoused by the hippies has gained widespread acceptance, and Eastern philosophy and spiritual concepts have reached a wide audience. The hippie legacy can observed in contemporary culture in a myriad of forms—from health food, to music festivals, to contemporary sexual mores, and even to the cyberspace revolution.

Small enclaves of original hippies continue to pursue their lifestyle, mostly in rural locations. And some younger people, called neo-hippies, have adopted hippie ways.

Hippies were around at the time of the Vietnam war. They believed in free love and drugs. That's why they died out apart from some people who never grow up. When they say 'love' they mean sex but they don't know the difference. And going through life under the influence of drugs is not nice. It is a plot of the super rich because a person doped up is not knocking on the door for his fair share of the national pie.

the youngsters who declare they are hippies at present are idiots. they think of being a hippie is cool. Being one is a existence-style, no longer a fashion. the rationalization why my aunt, uncles, and fogeys have been hippies back in the 60s and 70s replaced into because of fact they have been very against the Vietnam conflict and that they've been against the way society acted. They wished make and join the replace. i know they smoked, drank, listened to great track, had intercourse, and traveled plenty back in the day. My mothers and dads have over one thousand vinyls. They gave me maximum of them. a number of my favorites are in my room, whilst others are in the basement.

Arebel from the 60's pretty much. Was anti-establishment including dress code, soap and water, conduct. Led the anti-war movement. Artists that produced some very impressive fine arts. Mostly oriented in the Southeast and California where the weather faciltated communal living. They were the "Me/mine" generation. They didn't die out, they got older and got involved with law and politics -- today's government is a reflection of their influence. (totally jacked up lack of "common sense" and morality)

hippies loved LSD and sex. they believed in peace, but had a lot of unrealistic expectations. and they didnt die out, some are still living (the ones that didnt OD or die from STD's). but the hippies did change american culture a little. obviously people dont act like the hippies in the 60's, but there are still some hippie-like things going on today.

I grew up in the 60s. A hippie was somebody who had long hair and smoked marijuana. They used to hang out in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. near where I lived. There are a lot of bookstores in Georgetown. There were streets full of hippies. I never saw one inside a bookstore.

By the way, Georgetown was named after King George II.

Where did the hippies go? Broke. You can't make a nickel smoking pot.

I remember Wavy Gravy saying any pothead with any sense of social responsibility would show up for the Smoke In at the Washington Monument. I was there. The hippies liberated an icecream truck and got teargassed. Wavy Gravy couldn't make it. He was broke.
