I dance ballroom and I have been taking lessons at studios for years. Yes, it is worth to pay the money if your teachers are good. If you're improving then yes. If you're not improving then why pay them. Any good private lesson should leave you with enough material to practice on your own or with your partner for 6-8 hours. If you're left the lesson with nothing to practice - you just had a very expensive dance with your teacher.
Unless you're swimming in money, start out with group classes. Those are way cheaper, and this is all you need at the beginning. They are usually $7-$15 depending on the area. You will be demonstrated a lot of stuff, you will be attempting a lot of stuff, and you don't need an individual intructor to stand over you and show the basic step over and over again to you and noone else. Private instructor is good for giving you specific feedback. But there is nothing to give feedback on if you know absolutely nothing. Once you feel you're not improving much in the group classes, only memorizing a bunch of steps this is when you need a private teacher. I started taking private lessons after 4 months of group classes and I think it was optimal. Attend group classes at least twise a week. This will help with retension. Even if it's not the same dance, your brain still goes in that area and it's good enough.

I've taken ballet and tap since age four. When I was five, I started taking jazz and musical theater as well. When I started fourth grade, I began taking ballroom dancing. At first it was awkward, but I soon grew to like it! I'm fourteen now and enjoy ballroom dancing along with the four other types of dance I do. Where I take dance lessons, it only costs $25 for one class every week, but most studios charge more than that. If you want to take ballroom dance lessons, do it!

Hi, If you are really serious about learning then you should invest in private lessons, then go out and practice. You'll probably pay $65-100/hr but you learn alot more because the foucs is on you. I just moved here from Sac where I taught ballroom and unless you have really good retention and can pick up alot just seeing people do moves, private lessons are the way to go. As long as you practice between lessons and aren't wasting time relearning what you already learned it will be well worth it. Good luck!
