Every Christmas we get a live tree, but this year is especially wonderful, because we will have a 9 month old little boy to help us celebrate! We were curious if we could still have a live tree? Do babies have any special allergy requirements for live trees? ( you know...no milk before a year, no honey before a year, no citrus...etc.) Thanks so much for you info!

Artificial Trees can be made of PVC. This is considered a toxic material. Some fake trees are made with Polyethelene which is less toxic but more expensive.

So weighing out a possible allergy, it’s probably going to be fine.
Have a great first Christmas with your baby boy.
Hats off to you for being an informed parent and looking out for the little one!

You are perfectly safe to have a real tree here is some advice though, are little girl was 10 monthes old at Xmas time and this is what we did:
One of the round gates around the Xmas tree as the branches can be more pointy than with a fake tree

No glass ornaments

Put it by a wall and tie a string to the middle to top of the tree then screw a hook into the wall and attach the string. This will help secure the tree and then you dont have to worry about the tree possible falling on the baby.

Dont forget to make sure the tree has plenty of water, dried out trees are the Number 1 cause of house fires around this time!!

I haven't known personally of any babies allergy to real trees. However, if you're concerned I suggest buying a bit of clippings and place then in your home. See if the baby has any reactions. If baby doesn't seem to be sensitive to it then go for the real one. Only concern would be if baby is crawling (which at 9 months may or may not be an issue) make sure there are no pine needles around for him/her to eat or get poked with. Obviously you'd want to put a barrier up around the tree.
EDIT:
Also if baby has asthma a real tree may not be a good idea as the strong scent may irritate the babies condition. We had to be careful what kind we got so the smell wasn't overpowering to our child who was sensitive to those things.

He should be just fine. be sure to watch him once you bring it in the house for any new allergy symptoms since some people are allergic to pine/evergreen trees. Also keep a close look out for any bugs that may sting or bite coming off the tree where they may have been sleeping before the tree was brought indoors. Other then that the biggest thing to be aware of is the strangulation risk of the lights and also possible poisoning from any additives you may add to the water to preserve the tree longer.

You can absolutely have a real tree, no issues unless he has been tested and is allergic to that tree. My daughter has certain tree pollen allergies and has NO issues with the Christmas Tree. Merry Christmas, early and enjoy the Holiday with him!

A live tree is grown outside and has mold spores on it - which is totally natural, however once you bring it in, it causes the mold spores to explode because it's nice and warm inside. Your once filtered air is now contaminated from the mold and any one who is allergic to mold will have cold like symptoms until you remove it. It can be as simple as a runny nose all the way to severe upper respiratory issues with symptoms like a productive cough or even wheezing. Artificial trees are the best way to go to have a healthy holiday season.

I had a real tree when my son was just 6 months. The doctor didn't tell us we would have any problems unless our son was actually eating the needles off the tree - then that would cause some probs!! Come to think of it, I guess that could happen- they are at that age where they eat everything!!

Generally the allergies are to mold in the tree bark and possibly to the chemicals that may have been sprayed on the tree to keep it green. See the link for more details.

We have always had a live tree and we have 3 young kids. It has never been a problem. If your child has allergies, it may be, but I don't think its common (like the milk thing.)

My parents always had live trees...just be sure you keep an extra watchful eye on your little one. I wouldn't let them eat or suck on needles, but there should be no problem. Like I say, traditions of cutting a tree and bring it in the home has been here long since fake trees....
