First off, this is not some disguised gay bashing, but a serious question...
I have known many lesbians as I tend to work in career fields that attract them. Some are extremely 'butch', and seem to do everything they possibly can to look as masculine as possible. This is fine, however, some seem to get very offended if anyone upon first meeting them mistakes them for a man.
Why is this?
If I grew my hair out, wore make up, spoke softly, and walked with a sway in my hips should I get offended if someone mistook me for a woman?
I actually told one of these women off one time, told her she had no right to be offended.

So, can some of the lesbians out there who fit this description help me to understand the situation?

Thank you in advance.

Really no butch should be offended by being mistaken for a man, especially if they are VERY butch. But, sometimes they are offended, and that's because ..... they aren't men!

They also get offended because some people who hate gays make fun of butch women on a regular basis.

The best you can do in that situation is say "Well, I'm sorry. It was an honest mistake, and I really did not mean to offend you."

i could be a manly lesbian yet I even have my days have been i might placed on a skirt and heels and so on. yet i might especially placed on shirts and sweat yet my lady buddy is one hundred% female, there is not any longer a manly bone too her, you does no longer think of she is a lesbian till she holds me or kisses me in public, yet i understand the place you're coming from hahaha its lesbians like me which might create the manly lesbian stereotype yet have faith it or no longer I even have had greater right this moment females than lesbian. So no longer all lesbians are manly regardless of the shown fact that it specific is a bonus being waiting to tug the manly look off.

Well, first of all I understand your point of view. It would be confusing from your standpoint. But, in all honesty, even though they dress or act "guyish", the fact is, they don't want to be guys. Some of them are just "tomboys". They like there hair short (less maintenence, less time, and you get to sleep in longer!,lol).....they like comfy clothes (and guys clothes are comfortable for goodness sakes!)They are women and they know this and they still don't like to be mistaken for a guy. It's usually an honest mistake on the person who assumed wrong. And the woman shouldn't go to hard on the person in my opinion. But the fact is......she's a woman...she likes being a woman....and even though she dresses or acts a certain way......if she hasn't changed her sex and her name, she's just fine with being female and would liked to be addressed as such.

They are offended because it's only YOU who think they are "trying to be a man". They're not. That's who they are. That's natural to them. They're just a very strong, independent, masculine WOMAN. They identify as women, and are offended if you tell them otherwise. Just like any man would be offended if you called him a girl (unless maybe he was a transvestite or drag queen).

Well i know a relative of mine is very butch, but she doesn't try to be. She just wears what she feels is comfortable.

its all about being comfortable. sure i wear mens clothing, im pretty butch except for my hair of course, but you are just being very stereotypical. i guess i cant blame you, that is an ignorant male for you. not trying to be rude, but its the truth. there are such things as "tomboys" you know. they are still women, of course its confusing to people that know nothing, but i guess thats why you are here. wow! and straight people shouldnt be allowed to answer this question...
