it depends on what you mean by better...
Dr. Martin Luther King jr. was more socially acceptable for white middle class folks and therefore was more able to sway general popular opinion.
Malcolm X was not generally accepted by white middle clas folks but he was very empowering for African Americans and his message was one that was much heavier on self emancipation rather than acceptance.
Honestly I think that both were extraordinarily helpful to the African American community at the time, (this is well evidenced by the fact that both were assassinated), but that King's message of pacifism, as opposed to violent self/community defense), was less dangerous to the powers that be so he is more extolled in standard school indoctrination, (er US history), classes.

Malcolm is on my top ten most inspirational persons list. Here is a person who came from nothing and became some one of significance. he was a person that continued to grow till the day he died. Racist...wrong..One of his messages was for blacks to stick up for themselves. Those of you who think of him as racist haven't done your home work...He separated him self from the Black Muslims partially because of their belief that whites are Devils..He came to believe that all races were equal...Notice the phrase.."came to believe". He continually transcended who he was and always for the better. He never had the opportunities that Dr. King's middle class background afforded him in life, yet he still made something of himself. His college was his 10 year stretch in the pen. He went in with a vocabulary of approximately 250 words, and came a very well spoken man with a great vocabulary (the book said 10,000 words).I believe Malcolm to be a better role model for people of all colors then Dr. King.. because his life path follows that of the "common person" and transcends that of the common person.
I am Caucasian and a non-christian.

As a African American, I would say that Malcolm X was the better leader hands down.
Malcolm X knew the racist heart of white people, and told them exactly what he thought of them.
Martin Luther King appealed to ideals and the greater good, but he knew that America was a very sick racist country.
I personally liked Malcolm X's approach.

The problem of meeting force with force when you are the weaker party is that you tend to get crushed in the long run. MLK realized this & knew there had to be a better path. X did not understand this & if the violence he advocated was played out in the street then thousands upon thousands of African-Americans might have been killed by overwhelming force while the quest for equal rights would have been destroyed for at least another generation.

Malcolm X was easily fooled.
Martin Luther King ended up in the oval office with Lyndon Johnson.
Martin Luther King got the civil rights laws passed and Malcolm X, did, what?
Martin Luther King was killed by an enemy.
Malcom X was killed by his own.
Who would you pick for your leader?

It is Dr. King Jr. whom I admire. I still use his vision as my own, Judge by their character and not by the color or their skin. My children have all been told two very important things from those I admire
1) The Golden Rule
2) Judge people by their character and not by the color of their skin, religion, or gender.
Well said Chi Guy, that is why I too use the words admire, I am by no means wise but I will always live by those who really are.

Dr. King without a doubt. From what I have heard, Malcolm X was no better than the racist whites during that time period.

Ironically, I would say Dr. King. The ironic part is, most black folks in America who say they are for equal rights for black folks and pretty much worship at the altar of Dr. King go against everything he said. People like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson promote divisiveness instead of unity between blacks and whites and champion programs like affirmative action and try to get black criminals off for committing crimes like the Jena Six, which goes against Dr. King's philosophy of judging people by their deeds and their character, not by skin colour.
