The NHL this year approved the teams the option for intraconference games to choose their colours.

For example, Chicago and Detroit have played 4x this year, each team hosting 2 games. Chicago wore red the first time at home and white the second time, and the same thing in Detroit.

When Detroit and Chicago visit Ottawa, Montreal, Buffalo, and Boston later this year, they will be wearing white (as is the rule in the NHL)

For their intradivision and intra conference games they will split the games wearing both their coloured, and white uniforms so that fans get to see a greater selection of uniforms

Through the first 3 games of Chicago's road trip they have worn red once (Nashville) and white twice (Columbus and Detroit)

Most fans prefer white at home because they will then get to see more of the colorful jerseys of the visiting teams - teams they don't see as often as their own. The NHL did a poll and learned this.

By the way, for over 30 years until the 80's it was the other way around - dark at home, white on the road - so the white at home isn't really old school.

I'm a Columbus fan. I happen to think our darks are better than our whites, so I enjoy seeing the blue jerseys at home games.

But if given a choice, I'd rather see the other team's colors all season. I enjoy going to the arena and getting to see Blackhawk and Red Wing red. Ranger and Maple Leaf blue. And all the other cool jerseys.

That has a lot to do with marketing the differeny jerseys. I havn't really paid attention, but the Blackhawks home sweater is white, as is Montreal, NYRangers, I'm sure others.
In the NBA, white, or the lighter color, is home worn. Same with baseball.
NFL is the opposite, with dark colors home. Except Dallas,
San Diego.
