I agree with the one who said they should go after pitching. I think the Cubs are so afraid to invest in pitching after what happened to Prior and Wood, that they'd rather try to outscore teams. Now to answer the original question, I'd say it's a toss up, but give Jones the slight advantage because of Hunter's injury history. I'd stay away from Rowand too, unless you get him for a bargain which you won't. I guess he thinks after one good year, he deserves 13-15 million. I think not. Prove you can do it more than just your contract year first.
Leave it to the Cubs to give it to him though.

Assuming that this was simply a really bad off-year, I'd think that Andruw Jones is the better choice. His power numbers and ability to get on base have been better throughout his career than those of Hunter, and their defense is equally strong. Neither has an OBP that I'd want from a slugger, but their power and defense are a tough combo to find at the position.

Really, I don't think the Cubs could go wrong with either player.

For Shawn G - Hunter has never hit .300 in his career, and has only hit 30 homers once. Jones has a better career OBP, and has surpassed 30 homers six times in his career.

The Cubs should get neither player. Jones is a VERY old 30 or 31, while Hunter is a VERY old 32. Hunter has played on astroturf his whole career. To sign him to a 5 yr deal would be a huge mistake. Jones, for years, had to be the defense in the OF for the Braves, and I believe that has taken it's toll. His bat looked very, very slow this year, and he wants 100 mil for 5 yrs. That's just a waste of money when you have a young CF in Felix Pie ready to take the job. Save your money for another stud pitcher, or trade Pie and a few minor leaguers for a stud like Kazmir, Santana, Bedard.
If I had to sign any CF, it would have to be Rowand, as he has the highest upside of all the CF's available.

Jones career numbers BA .263 OBP .342 HR 368 10 Gold Gloves Hunter career numbers BA .271 OBP .324 HR 192 7 Gold Gloves Besides the slight BA advantage, Andruw Jones is obviously better than Torri Hunter

Andruw Jones is overrated. He has the worst throwing arm in baseball and every first and third base coach knows it. He gets alot of assists because they are always running on him when they would have no chance to be safe with a decent throw. His bat was also looking awful slow this past season. I think he is close to the end of his career.

Torii Hunter, on the other hand, is an excellent player. Being a Cardinal fan, I think the Cubs should get Andruw Jones LOL.

Andruw Jones would be a much safer bet, since he almost never misses time due to injury. Plus he's younger. Don't forget that you have a relatively cheap Felix Pie ready to play CF. This is why neither Jones nor Hunter will end up in Chicago.

Why keep throwing a lot of money at position players when you need pitching to win championships? Jones hit .220 last year and Hunter happen to have his career year when his contract was up. I would stay away from both of these guys and get a guy like Rowand for much cheaper.
