Generally speaking the Pill is quite reliable especially if you are taking them at the same time each day, don't miss any pills, and check with your doctor or the pharmacist to be sure any medications you are taking won't interfere with the Pill's effectiveness. However, you are correct that even when taken correctly the Pill is not 100% effective. When my kids were 18, 16, and 12, I had been taking birth control pills faithfully for 11 years. I began to develop a problem with pain in my stomach whenever I ate and I started getting heartburn. At my regularly schedule yearly physical, we were all surprised, including my doctor, to discover that I was pregnant. I had not missed any pills, nor had I taken any medication that would have interfered with the Pill (antibiotics are the most common medication that women take while taking the Pill and end up unexpectedly pregnant). I had been having regular periods, except for the one just before my appointment which was slightly lighter and shorter than normal). I had to have an ultrasound to see how far along I was. We were quite shocked to find I was 17 weeks along already and I had no idea I was pregnant. It is quite likely that you won't get pregnant while taking the Pill, but it does happen sometimes. While there are many reliable ways to reduce the risk, there is always a chance of pregnancy any time you have sex.

The pill has a one in a thousand failure rate. So chances are very slim that it would fail anyways. Plus you were atleast a week before ovulation so most if not all of the sperm will be dead by the time the egg comes along. Don't worry about it.

If your not ready why are not using protection?
There can be side affects, not always but there is a chance.
