I think that the next 2 years are really his best shot, as you are pointing to, age will start to catch up with him, i think when he realises due to his age his chances are going to become more limited, maybe, he can turn the corner and do what he needs to to take the title.
But the most important thing to Federer is his Wimbledon title, the thing is he will always have some of his attention on that, therefore the distraction costs him in the end.

Lots of people will be biased in their responses to this question based on who there favorite player is, but that's not what your asking is it? If you have ever read Brad Gilbert's book "Winning Ugly" it explains how complex professional matches really are. The person with the best strokes, most stamina/speed, or even experience isn't always going to win. The mental game is a large part of that, and as it said in "Tennis magazine" Federer has the best mental game out there. If you ever watch his matches you will realize that he rarely gets upset or loses his momentum, but that's not to say that Nadal has a bad mental game. In fact, Nadal is probably the MOST persistent player in the world. Nadal does have the advantage of being fast as well as being "at home" on the clay. Judging from all of these things, they are pretty evenly matched. If Nadal doesn't injure himself before the French Open, then we'll be looking at a pretty close and even match.

Had Rafael Nadal not been on the other side of the net;Roger Federer would have been the winner of 2 Coupe des Mousquetaires(French Open) already.
He has been after Nadal, the best clay court player in the world for the past 2 straight years now.Federer has made 2 straight French Open finals.
Yes Federer can and will win in Paris.
He can play on clay
he knows the importance of winning in Paris;not only as a European but he knows the importance of winning Roland Garros;knowing that just 1 win in Paris will cement his place above the likes of Pete Sampras;the record holder for the most slam winner who managed just 1 semis in the French capital his whole career in the history books.
He knows that he will be above Sampras;Connors and McEnroe(credit should go to McEnroe who at least manged to make it to the finals there).
Federer is 26;he's got time to win in Paris, having said that I would for him to win there next year.Agassi won at the age of 30 so Federer can win there not just 1 but many times.
There are a lot of players that are coming up and we shouldn't focus on Nadal solely;people will challenge Nadal on clay;if his body won't.

I agree, last chance to take the French is in '08. I thought he would have put up a better fight this year in the French finals. Federer ended Nadal's streak on clay this year in Hamburg.
If he doesn't win the French, he will never be greatest ever in my book. Sampras is not the greatest ever either. Tennis is played on grass, clay and hard courts. To be greatest ever you need to win on them all.

He's the second best clay-courter in the world, of course he can.
You can see Nadal being worndown now, if he keeps up his pace, he may not be at the French in a year or two.

The French open is now the most important tournament for Federer to win as it is the only slam he hasn't won so i think that he is going to give it his best next year and will hopefully win it.

That's a long shot, but he has tried his best. I think it will be
very very difficult from here on for him to win.
But I personally would like him to win, but the competition is
getting real tough every year.
