Generally, terrorists make an attack to make a statement and the get media attention. As a small minority with radical beliefs, they feel this is the only way to get attention to their cause and to hopefully "win". The twin towers were a symbol of corporate America and the first attack largely failed. The Pentagon is a symbol of American power so a successful attack against it is a political coup and an embarrassment to The US President, Congress, and people of the USA.

To send a message and the Twin Towers were perfect for sending their message. The Twin Towers represented America's financial strength and was in a city that also represented alot for America.

It was symbolic. The twin towers represents America's financial freedom, the Pentagon represents America's defense, and attacking these locations meant that America's foundation can be shaken. Terrorists do KNOW that their attacks will not change things for better, but they have a strong idiology, a full course of studying why America does what it does to them such as support for Isreal, and American military presence in their countries. The terrorists are very serious, spritual individuals who believes the only thing on their way to heaven is you, and they will DO ANYTHING to get your way out of their way to get to heaven. They feel they are oppressed, misrepresented, cheated, and had no other option but to use their lives to attack their emenies and since god (Allah) is with the oppressed, weak and betrayed individual he will grant them heaven.

Al-Qaeda attacked the World Trade Center as part of their war against America as explained by Osama Bin Ladin in his fatwa in 1998, in which he directed his followers to kill Americans. Al-Qaeda is a radical Islamist movement which is basically against the United States, allegedly for its presence in the Middle East, and its support of Israel, and America being predominately Christian, was probably another incentive.

In order to not give an "off the cuff" answer, I think it's necessary to examine 9/11 in the context of the past fifty years of US and Middle East politics and foreign relations.

Terrorists did NOT attack us for our freedoms. Targets were picked because of what they represented to the American people.
