Do we become more dependent on the government and less self reliant than we were 100 years ago? Did our founding fathers ever envision a populace that was as dependent on government as we have become?

Alakazam, I find it rather distressing to read that you believe that Democracy was a new concept, even in thee 18th century, since Athens was a democracy around 500 B.C., about 2300 years before the U.S. Constitution was ratified.

Very good question. This is what happens when the government involves itself too much in a citizens life. They should be there, in the background, not standing next to us every second of every day. Thanks libs.

It varies, some things are just too big for small groups or individuals. It need not cause dependence. The aid given U.S. aid for education and housing (The GI Bill) did make many of us dependent on the Feds but we did not stay that way. In fact we became less dependent as houses were bought and paid, educations were completed and used to be independent. We shall see.

100 years ago democracy was still a relatively new thing to the world. The point of democracy is FOR THE PEOPLE, by the people.. etc etc.. if we do not DEMAND things from our government, we might as well not desire a democracy. This form of government is the last type of government you want if you desire full on self reliance.
