Each clock costs $14.40 less than a watch.
So each watch costs $14.40 more than a clock
Or we may say that 2 watches cost $28.80 more than 2 clocks
Therefore,if we subtract $28.80 from the total cost of $80.20,we shall get the cost of
(2+3) or 5 clocks
So cost of 5 clocks is ($80.20-$28.80)
=$ 51.40
Cost of 1 clock
=$ 51.40/5
=$ 10.28
Cost of 3 clocks
=$ 10.28 X 3
=$ 30.84
Cost of 1 watch
=$10.28+$14.40
=$ 24.68
Cost of 2 watches
=$ 24.68 X 2
=$ 49.36
Therefore he spent ($49.36-$30.84) or $18.52 more on the watches.

2)After spending $210 on clothing,amount left with David is
Original amount-$ 210
He spends 30% of this for foods
Therefore amount spent on food
=30% of(original amount-$ 210)
=30% of original amount-30% of $210
=30% of original amount-(30/100)*$210
=30% of original amount-$ 63
Therefore,the tatal amount spent on clothing and foods
=$210-$63+30% of original amount
=$ 147+30% of original amount
It has given in the problem that after spending this amount he saves 49% of the original amountThus,the above amount must be (100-49)% or 51% of the original amount
Or,51% of the original amount=30% of original amount+$147
or 21% of original amount= $147
or,21/100 part of original amount=$147
or,Original amount=$147*100/21=$700

1)
Let x = cost of a watch
then x - 14.40 = cost of a clock
2x + 3(x - 14.40) = $80.20
Let Q = how much more he spent on the watches than on the clocks
Q = 2x - 3(x-14.40
2)
Let S = his original sum of money.
S - $210 - (30/100)(S - $210) = (49/100)S

1) 80.20=2w + 3c
c=w-14.40
80.20=2w+ 3(w-14.40)=2w+3w-43.20
Putting numbers on one side and variables on the other
123.40=5w
w=24.68
c=24.68-14.40=10.28
Checking the math
80.20=2(24.68)+3(10.28)
80.20=49.36+30.84 checks out
total spent on watches=2(24.68)=49.36
total spent on clocks-3(10.28)=30.84
Benjamin spent 49.36-30.84=$18.52 more one watches than on clocks.

2) x=original amount
clothes=210
food=30 of remainder=.30(x-210)
amount remaining is x-210-.30(x-210) and is also .49x
x-210-.30(x-210)=.49x
x-210-.30x+63=.49x
.70x-147=.49x put numbers on one side and variables on the other
.21x=147
x=700
checking the math
700-210-.3(700-210)=.49(700)
700-210-210+63=343
343=343 checks out
