They can go to jail. My father was furious when I came home one day with mom's car and showed him that she had left an open bottle of vodka inside the car. Had I been pulled over for anything and the car had been searched I'd have been up the creek without a paddle. My mother eventually stopped drinking and when my father confronted her she agreed not to leave any alcoholic beveridges in the car so that I wouldn't have to pay for something she did.

It all depends on what state you live in. In Texas, it is considered a Class C Misdemeanor, which is punishable by paying a fine not to exceed $500. But if you have two prior MIPs (minor in possession), then it is enhanced and you can then be placed on probation or serve a jail sentence of up to six months, or both. You should look up your state's statues regarding Minors in possession to see what the outcome would be. It would either be in the Alcoholic Beverage Code or the sate Penal Code. If you do a google search of Minor in Possession of Alcohol in the name of your state, it should take you to the right website. Hope this helps

It is a misdemeanor. They WILL get probation, and are likely to serve actual time in a youth detention facility (or jail if they are 18 or over). They WILL have to pay fines. Also, in MANY jurisdictions, they will not be allowed to get their driver's license until they reach 18 - Alabama is an example.
