Your cervix dilates....
imagine a cookie... that's your cervix before it dilates...
...as it dilates, the hole in the center becomes larger (1-10 cms)
... now, imagine a donut.... that's your cervix at 10cms.

It's different of course... just trying to explain it visually!!!

I do not know about effacing but they measure how dilated you are by how many fingers they can stick through your cervix. One finger is about 2 centimeters. Thumb to pinkie is about 10 centimeters. Doesn't sound pleasant, huh?

Your cervix is at the top of your vaginal vault. If you feel up there, where it stops, that is your cervix. That is the opening to the uterus, where your mucus plug (if you are pregnant) is.

They measure with thier fingers the opening of the cervix, I saw a little diagram on the desk at my dr office and it says 1 centimeter and has a little round picture and goes to 2 with a bigger picture, it's kind of interesting 10 is pretty big

1 cm dilated means that roughly one finger tip will fit into the opening of your cervix. They are taught different ways when they are in school to become OB/GYN's. :-)

They feel your cervix to see how open it is. The dilating is actually your cervix opening up. I think. lol
