Descartes describes there is no such thing as pleasure just a absence of pain
For example, sex, is not a pleasure but yet a fullfillment of a yearning which is a type of pain.

It is an interesting idea.It does make some sense,if you look at it like the way we describe temperature. In reality, you cant make something cold. You can only add or subtract heat. It's also alot like the buddhist concept of not wanting.

I think what some people are missing here is that Decartes could have meant that at the height of pleasure you are muting all your pain. If you could get rid of all pain all the time you would feel insurmountable pleasure at all times.

I so disagree with this. Sex is pleasure. No mistake about that. Loving is pleasure. Living is pleasure.
Pain is something separate.

Makes perfect sense to me. People always like to think that things can get better..so pleasure is impossible to reach.

Even then it doesn't really matter...... because even if it is ONLY an absence of pain......it still makes you happy.
