I'm exclusively pumping for my 5 week old due to us both having thrush that won't go away and it being too painful to actually nurse. I've been pumping for just over a week. Now one of my nipples is bloody. It doesn't hurt extremely bad, but the sight of pumping and seeing the wound open and close makes me sick to my stomach. How do you heal a nipple wound?

Next, the same breast with the nipple problem is only making 2oz every 3-4 hours while the other makes a little over 4oz. Is this normal? I'd like to be able to pump less often...any advice on how to accomplish that?

I had the same problem with open wounds and the pumping actually helped them heal up. I also put a large amount of Palmer's Nipple Cream on it after each pumping and it healed in 2-3 days.

At 5 weeks you should be producing alot more milk... I was the same way and I've since given up on breastfeeding because of it. I stopped and never had engorgement or pain and only leaked a little from one boob for 2 days and it's completely dried up now! So I would talk to a lactation consultant and doctor about supplements for you to boost your output.

There are herbal suppliments that you can take to increase mil production. Pumping less will cause you to have even less milk. I used Lanisoh (SP) cream and nursing pad while I was pumping. You can find them in any baby section at a grocery store. They are all natural. If even after you talk to a lactation consultant and are not producing enough milk you will need to suppliment with formula. There is nothing wrong with doing so. My son was a preemie and the nurses at Children's Hospital took the milk I was pumping and added formula to it and a special oil to help my son put on weight faster. People that give a thumbs down for suggesting formula have obviously never had a baby sick enough to be in the hospital or problems with nursing.

I think you should talk to your doctor you might need to supplement with formula until your nipple heals.
