What are you losing? anti-freeze or transmission fluid, or oil? If you're not losing anti-freeze, it's prolly not the head gasket. If you're low on transmission fluid, it might be a bad vacuum modulator on the trans. If you're losing oil, the inside of the tailpipe will be sooty and greasy and the smoke blue. Hope for the modulator.

Two ways to check a leaking head gasket is to first do a compression test. This is a really easy test to see if there is any compression loss. Also next test is a leak down test. This should tell you exactly where its leaking from.
