why is my tach not working?

I have a 93 fzr 600 and the tach does not work right. I can rev it and the rev limiter will kick and the the tach moves to 2 thousand. I took it apart and hooked up a AA battery to it right under the face and it moved to 5 thousand and with 2 aa it red lined but on the bike its not right

First make certain there are no breaks in the wiring, and all connections are clean and tight. If everything looks good, I would take it to the shop and let a pro handle the wiring problem.
