Well, I don't know if you have heard of an American holiday that if coming up, but it's called Thanksgiving. If you're talking about Christmas, then I might as well explain. Traditionally people say "Merry Christmas". Christmas refers to the birth of Jesus from the Christian religion. But, over the years Christmas was starting to be celebrated widely, meaning not only by Christians. To be non-denominational, people started saying "Happy Holidays".

Three different holidays are close together: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. I guess "Happy Holidays" is a quick and easy way to wish someone a happy one of all of them.

this is wierd. as a kid we always said happy thanksgiving and merry christmas. I actually came into a conflict with this at my daughters school when they told her she couldn't say merry christmas. alot of schools are going to the non christian songs for christmas pageants and are expressing to kids they must say happy holidays instead of merry christmas because of the different religous beliefs people have. I have seen it more and more. it is like the new thing I guess so no religion is offended in any way.

are you asking bc they are saying this instead of something like merry christmas? bc there are religions that don't celebrate christmas, people that may not celebrate thanksgiving (people who moved here recently from another country), those that don't believe in any sort of religion but celebrate holidays for other reasons, etc. not everyone is christian, and thanksgiving is an american holiday so those not born and raised here may not celebrate that specific holiday but have others at this time of year.

Um, because they are dorks? LOL

They should say Happy Thanksgiving. These are lazy people who can not think for themselves, or they work in a store and were told by misguided management to say Happy Holidays.

Just tell them in reply, Happy Thanksgiving.

People say this to be politically correct. There are so many people of varying nationalities celebrating the holidays from their own faith or country, no one wants to offend them such as saying Merry Christmas to a non-Christian person.
