Well, according to Homer it started with the "Judgement of Paris."
Okay. Thetis (a water nymph) and Peleus (King of Myrmidons) (both parents of Achilles) are having a big wedding. They invite all the gods and goddesses, everone except for Eris (the goddess of discord) because who wants discord at their wedding? Now Eris is incrediply insulted so she takes a golden apple from Hera's apple tree and carves "For The Fairest" in it and throw's it over the wall so it lands at the wedding. Now 3 of the most powerfull goddesses are fighting for it: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite because each of them thinks that they are the fairest. So... they bring it to Paris (a prince of Troy) for him to judge who it is. Paris sais it is Aphrodite because she says that she will give him the most beautiful woman in the world for a wife if he picks her. Now, Hera and Athena are both horibly offended. And Paris steals Helen, Menelaous's (one of the kings in greece) wife, because she is the most beautiful woman in the world. And Menelaous gathers an army and they sail onto Troy with the aid of Hera and Athena because they too want to get back at Paris. And so begins the Trojan War.
Hope I Helped :D

In the book, the mythological cause is because of a girl named Helen. She was considered the most beautiful girl in the world and was stolen from her husband by a man named Paris (of Sparta). The Greeks pledged that if anything was to happen to Helen that they would fight until the wrong was rightened. Thus, began the Trojan War.

Twinklet has given the best answer that could have been in all this world. Award her best answer. I was about to tell the story of Eris and the judgement of Paris, but Twinklet takes the prize.
