normally there is a heat shield around them most of the time they are built on to the cat its self. but if its falling apart then just buy a new cat. a universal cat could go for anywhere from 69.99 - 130.99 OE could go any where's from 150. to 800. or more.

cat's can reach up to 800 degree's Fahrenheit or more.

The heat shield is supposed to be about a half in. away from the cat. The cat runs at 1500 deg. and without the shield, the interior of the car will get really hot. If it rusts apart, it's good to replace it.

yes there is a heat shield around them it is not much trouble unless it stats ratteling or making noises most of the time it will be when your rpms are low or real high the bestr bet is to have some one tack weld it back together or just rip it off

yes. most cars have a shield that is usually welded into place and it is molded to the same shape of the converter. most of the time, age will cause the welds to becomre brittle and start breaking. as long as you dont feel exhaust air coming out, it isnt the converter itself

that's probably just the shield on it that your seeing ,most of those will rot off before the converter goes bad on a car.good luck.
