Definitely,Bush has decided and implemented executive powers which he claims are delegated to him by the Constitution and which neither the Legislative nor the judicial branches can interfere with. The result is when librarians are visited by the FBI,they can be punished for talking about it,Water boarding is not torture but a confidential investigatory mechanism not subject to to the rules of war, because captured insurgents are not soldiers but terrorists, who are behind the pale of the rule of law and the judiciary. In the end we have become a totalitarian dictatorship in order to maintain and defend our democracy. Lastly our President was not democratically elected because his opponent received more popular votes. This sounds, like Topsy turvy, 1084, Alice in Wonderland system of government. Good Spare Us

I would say for the most part, yes! The main problem is I believe all of the forms of our government are on a power trip. Trying to gain any more legal or political power possible. This is highly evident in all the various forms of our beloved Republic, from the Legislative branch to the Judicial branch and the Executive Branch against all of the Branches of our government. It seems the battle lines are being drawn up something like this, Congress vs The Supreme Court, The Executive Branch vs The Supreme Court and Congress vs The Executive Branch. The truly sad part about it is, it is we the people who lose in the end. These so-called checks and balances are degrading and there is a race to see which branch can usurp the most power and still have the Government and courts function. I believe in the end legally the Supreme and Federal Courts win. We loose! Politically the Executive branch will come out on top. Congress will loose for two reasons! 1. The have never fulfilled their constitutional protection requirement, let alone upholding their oath of office. 2. The Congress does not want a powerless president, do to the fact someday their party will have an elected President. They can cry all they want, but when it comes down to it they have to much vested in the current system. Again we loose! Do not get me wrong there are definite lines one cannot cross. I am just saying there is allot of wiggle room in the middle. I also believe these checks and balances have been eroding away ever since the adoption of our Federalist system of government. It just seems of late, the Judicial Branch has shot down the Legislative and Executive branches more now then ever in History. Peace!!! Love!!! Health!!! Harmony!!!

No, they are more like a window into what it looks like when a large segment of the population loses perspective and follows political parties like they were a professional sports team, and convinces themselves that any time they don't get their way that the 'natural flow' is disrupted because there are no more checks and balances.

Alexis DeTocqueville predicted this, and he's been dead for well over a century.

Yes, we are without a doubt in a period where we have polarized to the extreme where the average American cannot excel. Most is due to the difference between the Farmland, Rural, and Metro who feel each of the other two owe them the breaks instead of finding a way to be Americans.

They were lost under FDR as well. Look at all the useless, wasteful spending he got us into too. Giving ANY president a blank check to do what he/she wants is a mistake.

Also, don't rule out the judicial branch. Clinton's perjuring himself basically thumbed his nose at them too, but no one stands up for the judges...
