In Physics, how do you tell if different levers are real or ideal machines?

I need to know this for 8th grade physics - also, what are ways to find out when you are given limited information?

Levers are close to an ideal machine since hardly any energy is lost to say friction. However they bend and that means that some effort is spent on bending and not on the load.
