It had to do with the kung fu fad of the early 1970s. Bruce Lee's movies had become very popular and then there was a TV series called "Kung Fu" starring David Carradine. Carl Douglas' song was an attempt to cash in. He tried to follow that song up with the similar "Dance The Kung Fu" but it didn't do as well.

I don't know why they were fighting, but boy they were fast as lightning, it was a little bit frightening!
