The Mayans just foresaw they wouldn't be there anymore by 2012.
So, why make a longer calendar?

The Mayan Long Count calendar ends in 2012. That's no different than the end of the 20th century in our calendar (that particular Mayan calendar happens to be longer than one of our centuries, that's all). Its like the turning over of a car's odometer - its just another year.

Some of the "doomsayers" that say the Mayan calendar says the world will end either haven't read any of the information on what the calendar actually says, or they don't have enough scientific knowledge to interpret the calendar correctly.

For example, the sun will NOt pass directly in front of the galactic centre - our orbit isn't tilted that way. And even if it did, the galactic centre is 25,000 light years away hidden behind clouds of dust and gas - we can't even see it from here. There is no way that it can affect Earth in any way (short of exploding).
Then they say "the sun will cross the galactic plane, that's where the danger comes from", but the sun (and Earth) have crossed the galactic plane many times in the past and nothing has happened.
Then they say that this will cause the magnetic field of the sun to flip, making the sun 10 to 20 times hotter. The sun's magnetic field flips every 22 years - and until the last few decades we didn't even know that.

I think the Mayan calendar makers ran out of rocks to carve their calendar on. Before the next shipment of rocks could arrive from the quarry, the Spaniards conquered them.

The amazing event for 2012 is the London Olympics!

Its an interesting Calendar. Most calendar are meant to be perpectual. This one has an end to the Cycle.
All events in the Universe are celestial. They usually occur at the Same time.

Yes, I suppose it might look amazing when the Sun rises during a morning when the Milky Way is low on the horizon. If that sort of thing turns you on.

What is not so amazing are the rest of the lies being perpetrated on the internet and tv that are trying to latch onto the event to make it appear to be something more than what it is.

What is not amazing are the number of authors who are making money off of these lies.

What is not amazing are the vast number of people who are now so confused and misled by internet disinformation and lies that they are falsly convinced that some kind of doomsday event will occur.

What is not amazing is how these lies are being blamed on the Maya or their calendar.

What is not amazing is how apparent it has become that society is filled with gullable uneducated persons that have become so lazy that they would rather accept something printed on an internet webpage than spend any time researching what they base their beliefs upon.

I think that on 12/21/12 the sun will be aligned with the Milky Way's center for the first time in 26,000 years. What that will do is unknown the energy may change. The Mayan worked on that calendar for 5,000 years maybe the just wanted a break or maybe the Spaniards stopped the process. In any event I don't think the earth will cease to exist but as for humans well. . . .

They've been pretty accurate so far! One of my instructor's friends has been studying this for years. So far he cannot find any scientific evidence as to why the world would end. He did say that while everything lines up, our axis could change and the seasons, etc. would be switched around. Pretty crazy.

I'm going to go out with a positive ending and say that's the most that will happen!!!!

Geez, why all of the seriousness with the Bible compared to Mayans? People that were created by God just like anyone else? If people are going to back themselves up with the Bible, they must also back themselves up with the belief that the earth has only been around for 6,000 years and that dinosaurs and ice ages are just stories and never existed. That's just what the good book says...

The "amazing celestial event" has happened countless times over Earth's history. The event is our sun moving into alignment with the galactic equator, nothing more, nothing less. In spite of what a few greedy writers have tried to predict, nothing is going to happen to us. Read any of their silly books and notice that not one of them offers a single scientific reason why we'll be threatened.

I certainly believe in the the return of Nibiru from its 3600 year orbit and this is when it is closest to the earth at the earths 33° axis... But i don't know about the Nibiru (planet x) having an alien race of Annunaki.. though i would like to think its true if they are friendly.

I DO think that more information about the events and happening to the earth on the dates leading upto it are known by higher elite sources (Illuminati) and because of what is happening to the earth with addition gravitational pulls, only the selected (or extremely lucky) will survive... We humans are being made to believe we are causing all the earths destruction even though it has happened before many times.

When people talk of 'End Times' (& rapture) I think this is a panic situation as we are going into the unknown and humans like to feel they are in control of themselves.. 2012 is in my view only the end of time as we know it as through evolvement, we won't need clocks, calenders and such as we may even get back the 2 missing chromosones from out human body giving us the 12 strand DNA system hence extra senses some claim to have in telepathy and whats known a paranormal won't be para, it will be seen as normal.

Astrology matters in the effect of the gravitational pulling of planetary allignment when we are born as this tells the frequency of your own energies and therefore know how oposing energies effect you personally... 2012 is a time of a kind of human awareness.

I don't believe it. It's just as the same as other dooms day preacher. Nobody can tell the date for dooms day. Even scientist have different idea on this one. Basically, thier thoughts were when will a major comet will hit earth, the earth stop spinning, global warming, the sun factor and many more.
The Mayan calendar is a hoax.

I hate to say it, but they could be right with the way our environmental problems are going. The Mayans were pretty smart. On the other hand, everyone thought the world was going to end in 2000, but it didn't. It could be all hype.
