The Little Big Horn was the high water mark of Plains Indian military strength and success. In a series of battles scattered across the northern plains, during the next few years Indian power was broken and reservation life was imposed upon them. It was the beginning of the end for the Plains Indians...the end was Wounded Knee...."The last dream of the free days was crushed in the bitter cold of a Dakota winter and buried in a common grave at Wounded Knee."

After the battle of Little Bighorn where Custer and the cavalry were annihilated the US government put much more pressure on the indians who were driven from their property,herded into settlements , restricted in their hunting, and limited in their travels. The entire culture of the Plains indians changed for the worse.
