Why did Francis Lewis sign the Declaration of Independence?? Why was he a signer???

Few other signers [of the Declaration of Independence] felt the tragedy of the War for Independence more directly than Francis Lee, whose wife died as a result of British imprisonment. To further the cause, he also expended a considerable portion of the fortune he had acquired as a merchant.

He was among the first patriots to join the Sons of Liberty. When his wife was in danger from the British his friend George Washington intervened on his behalf to try to save her. He gave up most of his merchant fortune in contributions to the new country and so died in poverty.

He signed because he was an American patriot. Do you have a problem with that?

Peer pressure... anyone who did not sign when the others were pro-signing would have been socially ostracised and his public life would have been ruined.
