I personally don't feel Messiah is NOT over the top if you like the name. After all he is your son.
Besides, Messiah is honestly a GREAT name with GREAT Meaning. So many of us choose names just because they are "cute", I say GO FOR IT, when parents choose to name their child a name that has value.
Here are a few more biblical names to choose from.
Congrats and Many Blessings!
Messiah Emmanual
Emmanual Messiah
Caleb Andrew
Abraham Isaiah
Adam Jacob
Andrew Javon
Benjamin Jacob
Caleb Elijah
Daniel Jadon
Micah Daniel
Matthew Isaiah
Isaiah Matthew
Elijah James
Ethan Janos
Jakob Lael
Jadon Kenan
Jared Daniel
Jason Isaac
Javon Josias

YES, because their is only one Messiah and unless an angel told you it's your son, you might want to think of another name. I personally love the name Elijah. Congrats on your Baby!!!
Just a thought, what about naming the baby a differnt language for messiah..
The Greek word for Messiah is Christos
Shiloh is “generally understood as denoting the Messiah in French

Of course Messiah is too much to name a baby! It's too much to name anyone, except for Jesus himself!! I wasn't even aware that it was actually considered a name, and now that I know, I can't believe anyone would actually use it for their child!! Your family is right: There is only one Messiah, and that's our Lord, Jesus. There's no way I'd ever name my child something like that with the weight it carries. No one deserves the name except for Jesus.

i am a follower of Christ as u, and i think this is a STUPID idea. now i could understand some celeberty that wasn't a christian naming their child this for a statement, but coming from a "christian" that wants to name her child Messiah....i'm scratching my head right now, thinking huh? with all the health and wealth perverted so called christian teaching out there these days, i guess i shouldn't be so surprised by this. oh well, good luck with that.

Messiah relates to the divinity of Jesus, which is why I think it's not terribly appropriate to use it for a child's name. There are other ways to honor God in naming your child; here is a web site link for boy's biblical names, along with their meanings, that might be helpful to you. Best wishes.

omg don't name your son that. I agree with your relatives. There's only one Messiah and that's Jesus Christ. Even if you're not religious that's just too much to name your son. He would be made fun of and even adults would snicker. There are tons of Biblical names to choose from.

I would say yes. This would be a problem if you gave your kid any high-ranking title as a name. Imagine if you named him King, Priest, Chief, President, etc. It's a lot of implications in one name. Messiah in particular has a lot of connotations--especially that it's meant for only one person as decided by God and that meaning is going to overshadow how good it sounds.
There are a lot of names that have very religious meanings you might like. Many of the Biblical names have meanings relating to God, i.e. "God gives aid," "God is king" etc.

I can't imagine what kind of message you are trying to send- but your child will probably not be the messiah, so it's just going to be misery for him walking around with that name.
Choose a traditional name, if your child is unique, it won't make any difference. A unique name does not make a person unique.

My Aunt was Mary, my brother was really close to her. Was going to name her daughter that. My aunt said not to, it's an awful name to live up to
She hated her name, and would not give a child that name. You can not live up to the Virgin Mary.
Messiah is worst. I would not name a child that
Christian is ten times better. I would consider that name
I would not name a child Messiah or Emmanuel

Um, in a word ... yes. Certainly "too much" for a little boy. Or any grown man, for that matter! And if you truly are a "dedicated Christian," I'd assume you already realize that. ;) Most wouldn't use Messiah any more than they would Savior, Lord or, well, GOD. LOL Just a definite no-no.
