since x+y = 1 then I can substitute y for 1-x in the first equation.

now it is x + (1.4(1-x)) = 1.2

now I distribute it the 1.4 and simplify the left side.

I get: -0.4x + 1.4 = 1.2

I move the 1.4 to the other side and divide through by -0.4 to find out that x = 0.5

to find out the answer for y, I plug x back into the equation, x+y = 1. Y = 0.5 as well.

make sure to double check though!

You've got 2 equations in 2 unknowns. So, one way to solve for x and y is to simply subtract every term of the second equation from the first. When you do that the x's become zero and you're left with .4y=.2. Which means that y = 1/2. Plugging into the second equation, we see that x = 1/2 also.

solve for x by eliminating y:
x + 0 = 1.2 x=1.2
Solve for y by eliminating x:
0 + 1.4y = 1.2
Divide both sides by 1.4:
0 +y = 0.8571428

plug in the values:
1.2 + (1.4 * .8571428) = 2.4
Divide both sides by 2
0.6 + (0.7 *.8571428)= 1.2
Simplify:
0.6 + 0.6 = 1.2
Divide by 1.2
0.5 + 0.5 = 1
True statement. The ordered pair might be (0.5,0.5)

Test by plugging the new values:
0.5 + (1.4*0.5) = 1.2
Simplify:
0.5 + 0.7 = 1.2
True statement.
The ordered pair is (0.5,0.5).

x+1.4y=1.2
x+y=1

x=1-y
1-y+1.4y=1.2
1+0.4y=1.2
0.4y=0.2
y=1/2

x=1/2 y=1/2

Simplifying
x + (1.4(1 + -1x)) = 1.2
x + ((1 * 1.4 + -1x * 1.4)) = 1.2
x + ((1.4 + -1.4x)) = 1.2
x + (1.4 + -1.4x) = 1.2

Remove parenthesis around (1.4 + -1.4x)
x + 1.4 + -1.4x = 1.2

Reorder the terms:
1.4 + x + -1.4x = 1.2

Combine like terms: x + -1.4x = -0.4x
1.4 + -0.4x = 1.2

Solving
1.4 + -0.4x = 1.2

Solving for variable 'x'.

Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

Add '-1.4' to each side of the equation.
1.4 + -1.4 + -0.4x = 1.2 + -1.4

Combine like terms: 1.4 + -1.4 = 0.0
0.0 + -0.4x = 1.2 + -1.4
-0.4x = 1.2 + -1.4

Combine like terms: 1.2 + -1.4 = -0.2
-0.4x = -0.2

Divide each side by '-0.4'.
x = 0.5

Simplifying
x = 0.5
