I've researched the DPI/PPI issue, and get the difference between the two. I understand that if you start out with an portrait image anywhere between 2000-3000pixels in width it should look great printed to an 8x10in at 200-300dpi. My question is - what if an image was cropped and got to be only 1000 pixels wide and it needs to be printed to an 8x10in size paper? Without resampling it will look pixelated if printed at 200-300dpi, right? So is this one of those cases when it is actually a good idea to resample when enlarging an image?

Frankly, the two are not really comparable, as D applies to printers and P applies to monitors.

Just keep in mind that the higher the res on the PC, the better the output on the printer, and really, that's all you need to know. :)
