i am interested in attending college in east tennessee. however...i am from new england and i am seeking to go somewhere warmer for college. i know east tennessee is a mountainous region so i am wondering how much impact the elevation has. how do winters in east tennessee compare to winters in massachusetts? is it worth it to go to east tennessee in search of a warmer climate?

It depends on where you want to be in East Tennessee and how close to Virginia...but I will share my experience from my having lived in various places in Tennessee as well as 10 other states...

In the Valley and Ridge province of East Tennessee, the rivers and ridges run hundreds of miles northeast to southwest so you can go quickly from flat river valleys to steep ridges.

It is definitely warmer than Massachusetts in Winter on the average. However, depending on your location in a valley or on a ridge, you will see quite different temperatures and weather.

Mountain City, TN (in Johnson County in the very tip of northeast Tennessee) sometimes records the coldest place in the nation.

Johnson City, TN (in Washington County) occasionally has significant snow, but nothing like New England --- only on a very rare occasion did we ever see more than 6-8" at one time and even then only once during a winter -- mostly flurries and very light accumulation. It has great access to other places in the lakes and mountains.

On the average the winters will be much shorter, milder and less snow and ice than New England and the summers will be longer.

My advice: Pick your school based on what you want to study and then go to the best one that you can afford which teaches that subject. The weather at any college will only be for 4-6 years -- the education and reputation will be forever.

I'm in East tennessee...and its...mild...I don't think elevation plays too big an impact. The mountains down here in Knoxville are not really that big...If you're on top of a mountain, ok it might be colder. But for the most part is is definitely milder due to being further south
