Well, we'll never know. Wayne Gretzky played in an era when scoring was at an all time high- he wasn't nearly as great playing in the 90's during the hook and hold era. Still amazing yes, but not nearly as much so. That's why many people consider Mario to be better- he got almost as high as the 80's Wayne Gretzky in 90s, besides being out portions of every season with cancer, injuries, ect, and was a much more complete player.

Wayne Gretzky was a product of his times. Those times will never be here again, so don't try to force fit Tavares into Wayne's Skates. Same thing with Crosby Actually- let them become their own players. (Crosby actually seems to be developing into the next Mario- not surprising considering the guy he's living with...)

Byfuglien is by applying no means the subsequent Gretzky. he's no longer even a forward. no longer asserting he's a undesirable participant, yet he's not any Gretz. He in basic terms had a great evening this evening. it is getting in basic terms a sprint previous with the Gretzky comparisons, yet i think of it is inevitable that persons will constantly be while in comparison with Gretzky till somebody surpasses him because of the fact the main suitable of all time. As for John Tavares, he seems VERY proficient. he's a 17 12 months previous enjoying for the Oshawa Generals interior the OHL. Why he's so hyped: the time-honored minimum age to be drafted into the OHL is sixteen, however the OHL gave Tavares "spectacular participant" prestige and allowed him to be drafted (1st standard) at age 14. He scored 40 5 targets as a fifteen 12 months previous interior the OHL enjoying against adult adult males as much as 19 years previous. the explanation he's being while in comparison with Gretzky is by using the fact final season he complete with seventy two targets, breaking Gretzky's record for the main targets by applying a sixteen 12 months previous. He complete 2nd interior the OHL in scoring as a sixteen 12 months previous to Patrick Kane (the #a million %. interior the NHL draft), and likewise gained the OHL MVP award and became named CHL participant of the 12 months. for sure it is nevertheless a sprint early to call him the subsequent Gretzky, yet he's clearly and mind-blowing expertise and has been very superb thus far.

In a word?

No.

Gretzky will always be something greater than his on-ice statistics. He's the pinnacle of the sport, and even if his records get broken by somebody else, there will still be plenty of people that argue he was the best ever. Also, his dynamic presence truly helped the overall popularity of the sport...something no player since has been able to accomplish. And I've always said that Gretzky dominated hockey more than any other athlete in any of the 4 major NA sports ever dominated their respective sport.

Gretzky - NHL
Jordan - NBA
????? - NFL (no clear-cut "best ever")
Ruth - MLB (arguably the best...no clear-cut person)

Gretzky's records and dominance was unsurpassed in any major sport. The only professional athlete that comes close is Tiger Woods, but by golf not being a team sport, Tiger and Wayne are tough to compare.

I'm rambling (sorry)....to wrap this up.....Gretzky was the most dominant athlete in a major team sport ever. End of story.

How about letting this super-prospect become the...first John Tavares? Wayne Gretzky was one of those "once in a lifetime" players that people can look back and say that they had the pleasure of watching play. Let Tavares get out of juniors injury-free first, before hyping the kid.

It takes a special floater surrounded by a stacked team to ever be a Gretzky . With the cap as it is I can't see a team ever being able to develop together long enough to achieve that. Once a player gets good he wants too much money and has to be traded. There's no loyalty , no real players like left these days.

No one will ever be the "next Wayne Gretzky", ever.

Gretzky is one of the very few athletes who have surpassed superstar status to become legends. Even if someone could match his stats, they will never match the unmeasurable qualities of character, vision on the ice, respect of fans and teammates league-wide, heck world-wide, that The Great One had.

I repeat, no one will ever be the next Gretzky, ever.

Ha! There have been so many kids tabbed "the next Gretzky" in the past 20 years. How many of them did it? ZERO. I'll believe it when I see it. I think a better comparison might be will he be the best Crosby? We'll see.

Tavares has the tools to become a real good player. The next Gretzky might be a bit of a stretch, though. He also could become the next Alexander Daigle.

How many players have we heard are going to be the next Gretzky? It's been quite a few. People said Nylander, Daigle, Lindros, and so on were going be the next great one. Well, I think it's hard to tell until you actually see them play in the NHL.
