Every song has 16-32 bars in it. That roughly translates to 1 - 1.5 minutes of music. A bar is a measure of music. On your sheet music, there are vertical lines, each one marks a section and each section is a measure or bar of music. Just count out 16-32 measures of what you want to sing, mark your music (write START and END on it). Don't forget to nod to the accompanist when you're ready to begin. Usually you want to sing the most drmatic or colorful part of the song and that's usually the end. Count backwards from the last lyric of the song. Once you reach 16 bars find the mosr appropriate place in the next 16 bars to start singing and mark it. I'd make a copy of the music first so you can mark up the copy and keep the original nice.

Do you know your vocal range? Do you know what role you're auditioning for? Also, Pirates is an opera so if you can't sing high notes, I'm not sure what you consider high but the females in this show are sopranos to mezzos which are fairly high. You would most likely want to audition for a mezzo role which is lower than soprano.

Wicked would definitely not be appropriate here. Look at music from HMS Pinafore (Little Buttercup is an alto), The Mikado, The Gondoliers, or any other Gilbert & Sullivan show.

Good luck,
Marianne

A "16-32 bar audition song" means any part of any song that lasts for 16 to 32 measures. That means you're going to need a paper copy of the song you plan on singing. A measure would be from one vertical bar to another, in case you didn't know. Just count out a part of the song that is between 16 and 32 measures. Don't just do the minimum or maximum, cut off when it makes sense. Try to fit in a verse and a chorus if you can, but if you can't fit both, sing just the chorus.

Just take a song from your favorite musical and sing that one! If you don't have any, Wicked would be a good one to pick from, there's almost only female solos and duets. Another possible one you might want to look at is Hairspray, which also has a fair amount of female solos.

As for monologues, look through the selection in the site listed below. They're not bad.
