The southern states; states that were part of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. But that is only a vast generalization. A redneck shares cultural values (a pickup truck and a good hunting dog) rather than strict locations. Most urbanites in Atlanta are far from being rednecks.

The term "redneck" can apply to a description of people from any area, but traditionally the South has had an unfair stereotype of having more than their share.

Christ, they're everywhere!
I know that the South---especially areas like Kentucky, Tenesee and Virginia---are usually associated with the term "redneck", but believe you me, there are plenty of rednecks in the little backwater towns of Northern Michigan, too.

I have never been to the south but I understand they're all supposed to be there.
However, I live in Washington state on the west side, which is very liberal and diverse. On the east side of the mountains, it's big time redneck country! It doesn't so much seem like two different states but rather two different worlds!

Rednecks are all over the country but I spent some time in West Virginia and it seems very backwards. That's redneck heaven.

The Smokey Mountains. The term was coined to identify those railroad workers who wore red bandanas around their necks symbolizing their affiliation with organized labor. The term is about 70 years old. It has since come to identify "country or backwoods folk."

The south--specifically Mississippi and Arkansas. Maybe some Alabamans, too.
