i have to dogs. i want to plant grass in late spring 08. supposedly i can get free wood chips from the city. my backyard has no grass. when it rains, there's mud everywhere. i'm worried about the mushrooms the mulch will produce. will it harm my dogs if they eat it? also, will i have to remove the mulch before planting? i just want something that will keep the mud at bay. my dogs are inside/outside dogs.

The mulch chips should be fine. They only grow fungus if they get wet for a long period of time and are undisturbed - with your dogs romping on them I wouldn't worry about mushrooms. Be aware that they'll probably also chew the chips - a lot of dogs consider these fair game as chew toys.

I lived on a busy street and had two active boxers. They had to have a fenced in area. I fenced in half the yard and put the whole yard in wood chips. I had the same problem as you...mud,slop, dirty dogs. The wood chips were great. I never had any harmful mushrooms and the dogs never got sick. I kept that area in wood chips and had my grass and garden outside of that area. I kept the chips poop free, and got a new load of wood chips every year. When one boxer passed on and the other was old, she just meandered around the yard so I took down the fence, rototilled the area and put in sod. The sod was on such heavy organic material that I hardly had to care for it at all. So, my experience with wood chips was positive.

The wood chips will be good for your future lawn. The more organic material you can put in the better. You should have little mushroom growth between now and next spring.

Carob chips are best for puppies. They're really a excellent substitute for chocolate chips in recipes for dogs! 5 is not going to damage her! I am definite your aunt's canine may have doggies just excellent, however probably you will have to advise to her to head to the vet and get more information on breeding puppies!? My canine's dad was once a full-dimension Aussie, and her mother used to be a mini Aussie, and she or he became out mini. Maybe that'll be what happens to your aunt's pups!?
